UK’s withdrawal from the European Union

Date: January 31, 2020

The United Kingdom (UK) will officially leave the European Union (EU) on 31 January 2020 at 23:00 GMT.

As from 1 February 2020, the UK will enter into an 11-month transition period in which it will continue to follow EU rules but without representation in the institutions of the EU. This arrangement is expected to come to an end on 01 January 2021.

During the transition period, Mauritius and UK will continue to trade under the EU-ESA (Eastern Southern Africa) interim Economic Partnership Agreement (iEPA) and  operators will continue to benefit from duty free access on the UK market.

The UK- ESA Economic Partnership Agreement signed on 31st January 2019, will enter into force after the transitional period expected on 01 January 2021.  The Agreement will ensure continuity of trade with the UK on similar terms as under the EU-ESA iEPA.
