First Ministerial Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) Blue Economy Conference from 2 – 3 September 2015
The First Ministerial IORA Blue Economy Conference was held in Mauritius from 2 – 3 September 2015 on the theme “Enhancing Blue Economy Cooperation for Sustainable Development in the IORA Region”. Member States had an opportunity to discuss in depth co-operation in the fields of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Renewable Ocean Energy, Seaports and Shipping and Offshore Hydrocarbons and seabed Minerals.
Mauritius as an Ocean State is resolved to make the Ocean Industry a new pillar to sustain its economic development as advocated by the Prime Minister in his keynote address.
Hon E Sinatambou, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, chaired a Ministerial Retreat on 3 September. The Conference adopted a Declaration on Blue Economy. The latter recognizes, inter-alia, the sustainable use of marine resources in accordance with international laws, including UNCLOS and the Convention on Biological Diversity. It also calls for informed decision-making, the empowerment of women and enterprises and promotion of mutual co-operation with Dialogue Partners.
As the incoming Chair of the IORA, Indonesia offered to host the 2nd Blue Economy Conference in 2017 in the margins of the 20th anniversary of the Organisation.
