On 3 February 2020, His Excellency Mr. Abdoulaye Diop, Minister of Culture and Communication of Senegal, and the Chief Guest at the 185th anniversary of the abolition of slavery, called on the Honourable Nandcoomar Bodha, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade. H.E. Mr Abdoulaye Diop was accompanied by Mr Eloi Coly, Curator of the “Maison des Esclaves de Gorée”, located on the Ile de Gorée, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Both sides highlighted the historical and cultural linkages between Mauritius and Senegal and expressed appreciation on the excellent relations between the two countries. Issues discussed included the possible assistance from Senegal in the setting up of the Inter Continental Slavery Museum, participation from Mauritius in the “Biennale de Dakar” to be held from 28 May to 28 June 2020 in Dakar, and the possibility of jointly tabling an AU Resolution to commemorate the victims of Slavery and Transatlantic Trade.
